She’s based in California, but every time she comes to New York, Maryfield seems to bring her `A’ game.

Sunday afternoon, that resulted in a Grade 1 victory, as she got up in time to nose Baroness Thatcher for the victory in the 29th running of the $250,000 Ballerina for fillies and mares at seven furlongs.

“This is so cool, because my son is here and I started taking him to the track when he was five years old,” said winning owner Mark Gorman, who also won the Grade 2 Distaff Handicap at Aqueduct in March with Maryfield. “This is just so exciting to win a Grade 1 at Saratoga, one of the best tracks in the world.

“She’s been a gift from the horse gods. I believe in this horse. She’s the great Maryfield. She’s given us so many presents, why not another one?”

This one didn’t exactly come gift-wrapped.

Indian Flare, pressed by Baroness Thatcher, got the first quarter of a mile in :22.27 and the half in :44.57. Baroness Thatcher took over and seemed in control after six furlongs in 1:09.39. But Maryfield, who broke from the 1-hole, had saved ground with jockey Elvis Trujillo and angled out on the turn for her run at the leader.

When they hooked up, neither would relent and it was a bob that in 1:22.78 that was the difference. Those $2 win bettors among the crowd of 19,103 also got a gift – a $35 payoff.

“My horse was feeling great,” Trujillo said. “That other horse was pretty tough. She fought hard. But my horse matched strides with her and caught her at the line.”

The $150,000 moved Maryfield’s career earnings above $700,000 from 27 career starts.

“Elvis (Trujillo) rode her great last time; that’s why we really wanted him to come and ride here this time,” Gorman said. “He rode her perfectly. She doesn’t break real quick, but he doesn’t rush her up. We’ll go for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (October 26, Monmouth Park). We’ll probably go straight to that race. I don’t think Doug (O’Neill, trainer) has anything else planned for her.”

Baroness Thatcher, who was third in the Grade 1 Darley Test earlier this meet, ran hard but was frustrated again.

“This was a tough beat,” said trainer Patrick Biancone. “She ran great. She was pressed hard. She really fought hard in the stretch. I guess it was better to be second than off the board.”

Miraculous Miss nosed Boca Grande for show. Swap Fliparoo ws fifth, followed by previously unbeaten favorite Burmilla, Nothing But Fun and Pussycat Doll.

Indian Flare, the early pacesetter, broke down after the wire showed a lot of heart. That’s the one thing she has a lot of, and she makes up for the little

“She fractured her pelvis, probably at the break,” said New York Racing Association Chief Examining Veterinarian Dr. Anthony Verderosa. “She died of cardio-vascular shock.”
