With the scratch of Barancella from Monday’s 12th running of the Grade 3, $100,000-added Glens Falls Handicap, Allistair McDonald Buchanan’s Rosinka only had to worry about seven other fillies and mares in the 11-furlong, inner turf course race.

And herself.

The 4-year-old, Irish-bred Soviet Star filly made a winning move coming for home and opened up daylight, but took an awkward step under jockey Jeremy Rose and made the race interesting, as she held on for a neck victory over Mauralakana in 2:08.45.

The adventurous journey produced her sixth victory from 11 starts and her fourth win in a row for trainer H. Graham Motion.

It all began when longshot Mabadi struck the early lead on the firm course, and with the rail down, set fractions of :23.34; :48.65; 1:13.43 and 1:37.52.

Rosinka then kicked in on the turn and opened daylight in the lane. Suddenly, with an eighth of a mile to go, she bobbled and she allowed Mauralakana a chance to rally. But she recovered quickly and held on to win.

She returned $10.80.

“This is a very good filly,” said trainer H. Graham Motion. “I thought she was a little disrespected; the filly she beat at Delaware (Palmilla) came back and won the Beverly D. She’s very difficult. She’s like a time bomb. I thought it was frugal to keep her here. I was more nervous about getting a saddle on her than I was about the race.

She inherited the lead the last couple of times, and when she gets to the front, she gets to goofing off.”

Motion said that Rosinka, who returned $ to win, would start next at Belmont Park’s Fall Championship Meet in the Grade 1, $600,000 Flower Bowl Invitational for fillies and mares, 3 and up, at 10 furlongs on the turf on September 29, as long as she came out of the Glens Falls in good shape.

Belmont Park’s 33-day Fall Championship Meet begins on Friday, September 7.
