Weather permitting, trainer Carl Nafzger will have Kentucky Derby and Jim Dandy winner Street Sense on the Saratoga Race Course main track tomorrow morning between 6:30 and 7:00 for a five-furlong workout as part of his preparation for Saturday’s 138th running of the Grade 1, $1 million Travers Stakes, presented by New York Lottery, for three-year-olds at a mile and a quarter. This morning, Street Sense galloped a mile and an eighth over the main track before schooling in the paddock. “The way the track was this morning, it was a little deep,” Nafzger said. “He will have a nice work. I figure a 1:01 or 1:02; if it is a little faster, he’ll work a minute and change or 1:01 and change. I shouldn’t say that because he might work something else, but it will still be a perfect work. Everything is good and we’ll be on top of it. He’ll jog, walk, gallop and run.” Jockey Calvin Borel, who took off Monday’s mounts after suffering a case of laryngitis overnight, is expected to work Street Sense tomorrow morning. Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito continues to ready his two Travers hopefuls, C P West and Helsinki, for Saturday’s “Mid-Summer Derby.” C P West, a good second to Street Sense here in the Jim Dandy, is likely to start as the race’s distant second choice behind the Kentucky Derby winner. Helsinki, meanwhile, has the look of an outsider after his no-response fourth here in the August 5th Lemon Drop Kid. “Like everybody else, we’ve got to get past Street Sense,” said Zito, who won the Travers three years ago with Birdstone. “You just hope that Street Sense has somewhat of an off day and you have a good day. You always got to beat them all, but on the other hand, I got two nice horses and it’s good to be in there anyway. We’ve got a fighting chance.” C P West will team up with leading rider Cornelio Velasquez, a fact Zito loves. As for Velasquez, he entered today’s card with a two-win lead over Hall of Famer Kent Desormeaux, 29-27. “I’ve been having luck with Cornelio,” Zito said. “He’s a solid rider and every time I put him on a horse, he tries hard. He’s a very consistent jockey and a lot of people want him. He rides a good race all the time and he rides any kind of horse.” Julien Leparoux, the nation’s champion apprentice last year, has the call on Helsinki. Helsinki’s sire, Distorted Humor, produced Flower Alley, the Travers champ of 2005. “Julien wanted to ride him back,” Zito said. “The horse wore blinkers in the Lemon Drop Kid, but we’re taking them off because it didn’t work out. Julien has got a good feel for him.” A final decision on whether Stonestreet Stable’s Tiz Wonderful will start in the Travers will be made Tuesday morning, according to Scott Blasi, assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen. With exercise rider Carmen Rosas aboard, Tiz Wonderful worked six furlongs this morning over the Oklahoma Training Track in 1:13.87. Blasi said Jess Jackson, owner of Stonestreet Stable, and Asmussen will have a conference call later today to discuss Tiz Wonderful’s status for the Travers, and that a final decision would be made based on the horse’s physical condition. “He worked well,” said Blasi of Tiz Wonderful, sixth behind Street Sense in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy here on July 29. “I was very happy with the way he worked. He came out of that race well and has trained forwardly since then. He was a little body sore after that race, but it is a non-issue now. We’ll see how he comes out of the workout tomorrow. I think that’s when the decision has to be made.” Blasi also had Preakness winner Curlin working for the first time since finishing third to Any Given Saturday in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational three weeks ago at Monmouth Park, breezing five furlongs in 1:03.64 over the Oklahoma Training Track. “He worked beautifully,” Blasi said. “I liked what I have seen in him. It was his first work since the Haskell and he’s in great shape. I don’t think his race was puzzling in the Haskell. He was coming off a two-month layoff. Any Given Saturday was set up perfectly for it. He was coming out of the Dwyer after four weeks. Against good horses, you can get beat under those circumstances.” Curlin, who was also second in the Belmont and third in the Kentucky Derby, is being pointed for the Grade 1, $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup Invitational for three-year-olds and up at 10 furlongs at Belmont Park on September 30. From there, Curlin will head back to Monmouth Park for the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic at 1¼ miles on October 27. “Our goal is the Breeders’ Cup Classic and we’re going to take the best possible route to get there,” Blasi said. “The timing is very good for us. Having Curlin do so much in such a small period of time and having him run peak performances in the Triple Crown races, I think it is asking too much of any horse to keep them at a peak level from August to the end of October. If he ran back in the Travers and then another prep, what we would be asking him to do is a lot. We have to have his best interests in mind all of the time. As much as I would like to lead him over (for the Travers), you have to do what is right.” Zayat Stables’ E Z Warrior put in his final work this morning before Saturday’s Grade 1, $250,000 King’s Bishop for three-year-olds at seven furlongs. Tonja Terranova, who is assisting trainer Bob Baffert at Saratoga, had E Z Warrior breeze five furlongs in 1:00.48. “I know Bob wanted him to have one more five-furlong breeze before the King’s Bishop,” Terranova said. “Since coming from California, E Z Warrior has put in two really nice workouts. He’s ready for the King’s Bishop.” E Z Warrior, who was unbeaten in three starts prior to his eighth-place finish in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Handicap at Del Mar, is expected to meet Hard Spun, First Defence, Most Distinguished, Forty Grams, King of the Roxy, Pauillac, Spin Master and Teuflesberg. The National Museum of Racing’s La Fiesta Festival, celebrating the traditions of the backstretch, will be held Tuesday evening, August 21, behind the Recreation Center off Union Avenue, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. There will be musical entertainment by Alcatraz and La Taineri. Tango Fusion will be performing dance demonstrations and a workshop of tango, salsa and rueda (salsa in the round). This event is free and open to the public. Food will be available for purchase. Wednesday is Stewart’s Shop Day at the Races, fans of all ages may participate in the annual Ice Cream Eating Contest. Sign-up will take place near the jockeys’ silks room, and the contest will begin at 2 p.m. Also on Wednesday, Fast Track Greyhound Adoption will have an exhibit near the Big Red Spring from noon to 4 p.m., where fans can learn more about adopting these swift, likeable animals when their racing careers are over. On Friday in the backyard, Saratoga will host the 10th annual Battle of the Brews, featuring some of the top local microbreweries. Proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross, Adirondack Saratoga Chapter. For more information, call (518) 792-6545. REMINDER: Race participants and working members of the media are invited to the post position draw for the Travers on Wednesday, August 22 at 11:10 a.m. in the paddock. Breakfast will be served, beginning at 10 a.m., in the At the Rail Pavilion, which will also be the rain site for the draw. |
