Trainer Carl Nafzger had Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense galloped a mile and quarter over the Saratoga Race Course main track this morning as his final tune up for Saturday’s 138th edition of the Grade 1, $1 million Travers, presented by New York Lottery, for three-year-olds at 10 furlongs. “It was a nice, easy gallop we had him do this morning,” Nafzger said. “He came back fine and he’s ready to go for the Travers.” Travers hopeful For You Reppo galloped a mile for trainer Helen Pitts on Friday morning. “He just had a nice easy gallop just to keep him on his toes for tomorrow,” Pitts said. For You Reppo is coming off a third-place finish in an allowance race on the turf at Arlington Park on July 25, where he was beaten by one and three-quarter lengths. That start was his first since March 24, because the son of El Corredor had some foot problems that him off the Triple Crown trail. “He’s been doing super,” Pitts said. “He has really gotten back in the game and looked good. We had to back off a little because of some foot issues early this summer, so we were kind of quiet. But when he gets back in the game, he really gets back in the game. This race will be tough, but you never know until you try.” Co-owner Dr. Carl Gessler named For You Reppo after his fifth-grade baseball coach, Steve Reppo. Dr. Gessler said that his former coach has followed For You Reppo’s career and was honored to have the horse named after him. Dr. Gessler and his family also truly enjoy Saratoga. “We’ve been coming up for the last 20 years,” Dr. Gessler said. “It’s our annual pilgrimage. We love it up there.” Dr. Gessler, a life-long racing fan who used to sell chairs outside of Oaklawn Park as a youngster, has had some racing success at Saratoga as well. He owns Murch, who was third in the Grade 3 Saranac Stakes in 2006 and he is an owner of Lauren’s Tizzy, who won this year’s Fleet Indian Stakes at Saratoga. For You Reppo’s name is not the only sub-plot with this horse. Pitts was a long-time assistant and exercise rider for trainer Ken McPeek who sends out Loose Leaf, 12-1 on the morning line in the Travers. “It’s a lot of fun,” said Pitts, who is looking for her first win at Saratoga. “Ken gave me a great opportunity and put me in a wonderful position. Its tough to compete against him because he always has nice horses, but it’s always fun.” Jockey Garrett Gomez has picked up the mount on For You Reppo, who will break from post 3 and is 20-1 on the morning line. Sightseeing, also entered in the Travers, galloped on Friday morning. The son of Pulpit galloped a mile and a quarter for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey. “He galloped out this morning and everything is fine,” McGaughey said. “He came back to the barn good. I’m happy with him.” Sightseeing will break from post 7 and is the 6-1 third choice on the morning line. ESPN will televise the Travers, race 10 of a 12-race card that begins at 12:45 p.m. during its two-hour broadcast that begins at 4 p.m. Eastern. The New York Racing Association will offer a $1 million guaranteed all-stakes Pick 4 that starts with the seventh race, the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch at 4:20 p.m. There is also a $100,000 guaranteed Grand Slam that begins with the sixth race at 3:42 p.m. Parking gates and admissions open at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Travers Day. Clubhouse admission is $10, while grandstand admission is $5. There is no free admission for breakfast on Travers Day and there are no tram tours. |
