West Point Stable and Lewis G. Lakin’s Irish Smoke, making only the second start of her career, ran by front-running More Happy in the stretch and scored her first Grade 1 victory Sunday afternoon in the 116th running of the $250,000, seven-furlong Spinaway for two-year-old fillies. It was the second Spinaway victory for trainer Patrick Biancone, who won this race in 2004 with Sense of Style. Sunday, it was Irish Smoke who was stylin’. The Smoke Glacken filly was far back under jockey Julien Leparoux, as More Happy emerged from an early scrum to get the first quarter of a mile in :22.02; the half in :44.82 and six furlongs in 1:10.73. But More Happy, who won the Grade 2 Adirondack here on August 15, began to falter. Irish Smoke inhaled her. Irish Smoke stopped the timer in 1:24.24, and it was three and a quarter lengths back to A to the Croft in second. Yonagucci, Morakami, More Happy, Blitzing, Phantom Income, Salty Wave and Passion were the trailers. “(Leparoux) rode a lovely ride the first time, in which she learned something,” said Biacone, as Irish Smoke returned $4.50 to win. “Today, she kicked home and she was beautiful. She’s a very talented horse.” Biancone’s attorney, Fred Becker, told Daily Racing Form that his client would not appeal a 15-day suspension for a test-positive for a bronchial dialator found in one of his horses at Churchill Downs in the spring. The drug, aminophylline, was, according to Becker, used to treat a cold. Biancone’s suspension begins on September 6. “This was the right way to go on `holiday,’ Biancone said. “I am going to enjoy tonight and see how she comes out. She stands today to be one of the best fillies in the country. Hopefully, she takes this race well and then, maybe, she will run once more before the Breeders’ Cup (October 27, Monmouth Park).” Although she ran second, A to the Croft pleased both trainer Ken McPeek and Hal of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux. “She’s just all class,” McPeek said. “She doesn’t want anything to do with six or seven furlongs. It was a little frustrating to run second in such a big race. She’ll go next in the Alcibiades (Grade 1, $500,000 Darley Alcibiades, mile and a sixteenth, Keeneland, October 5).” Added Desormeaux: “I think she is begging for more ground. This is not her niche, and she still competed. It’s going to be one of those things when they add more real estate to these races. You’re going to really read about her.” |
