The 2008 logo for the 139th Travers Stakes presented by Shadwell Farm commemorates the dramatic finish of last year’s edition, won by Kentucky Derby hero Street Sense over the game longshot Grasshopper. With the distinctive roofline of the Saratoga Race Course grandstand in the background, the logo depicts the moment just past the finish line as winning jockey Calvin Borel peers back at his good friend Robbie Albarado, who finished a half-length behind aboard Grasshopper following a heart-pounding, stretch-long duel. Rendered in the blue-and-yellow silks of Street Sense’s owner, James Tafel, the logo is based on the photograph taken by New York Racing Association photographer Adam Coglianese that appears NYRA’s 2008 calendar. The $1 million, 1 ¼-mile Travers presented by Shadwell Farm, also known as “The Mid-Summer Derby,” is the oldest stakes race for three-year-olds in the United States and is the highlight of the Saratoga meeting. Named for the first president of Saratoga Race Course, William R. Travers, who won its inaugural running in 1864, this year’s Travers will be run on August 23 and televised nationally on ESPN. |
