Anthony Brown of Brooklyn won The New York Racing Assocation, Inc.'s (NYRA) fifth "Grand Mondays" promotion, which rewards one lucky fan with a $1,000 win wager on a horse of his or her choosing in that day's eighth race, but he failed to cash when his selection checked in fifth.
Brown, 54, is a construction worker originally from Jamaica and a frequent visitor of Aqueduct Racetrack. He chose to place the $1,000 voucher on the 6-5 favorite Uman Candy (No. 7) because of the filly's pedigree and rider.
"I like the breeding, but the jockey is my personal [favorite]," said Brown of Manny Franco. "I like [the horse] very much."
Uman Candy, a daughter of Candy Ride, tracked the early pace in third before being put to a drive midway around the far turn. The filly then encountered some trouble in midstretch, being forced to steady between horses, and ran evenly thereafter.
