Brooklyn native Hector Figueroa is first recipient of Grand Mondays $1,000 win bet
By Sean Morris
Hector Figueroa of Brooklyn was the inaugural winner of The New York Racing Assocation, Inc.'s (NYRA) "Grand Mondays" promotion, which rewards one lucky fan with a $1,000 win wager on a horse of his or her choosing in that day's 8th race.
Figueroa, now retired and a frequent visitor to Aqueduct Racetrack, took little time to make his selection once informed he had won the $1,000 voucher. A big fan of jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr., Hector placed his bet on Ortiz's mount, Cavu (No. 5), in the featured $100,000 Jimmy Winkfield.
After breaking last in a field of seven, Cavu gave the Brooklyn native a brief thrill around the far turn, making a menacing four-wide move towards the leaders. But Cavu flattened out in the stretch drive to finish fifth, beaten six lengths by winner Hot Heir Skier.
Be sure to come out to the Big A next Monday, January 27 when another Grand Mondays winner will be drawn.
