John De Martino of Brooklyn, won The New York Racing Assocation, Inc.'s (NYRA) fourth "Grand Mondays" promotion, which rewards one lucky fan with a $1,000 win wager on a horse of his or her choosing in that day's eighth race, but failed to cash when his selection checked in seventh.
De Martino, 54, works for the New York City Department of Transportation as a highway repairman and is also part of Drawing Away Stable, leading owner on the NYRA circuit in 2013. Unlike previous Grand Mondays winners who selected favorites, the racetrack veteran decided to put his win voucher on a longshot, E Z Passer, who went off at odds of 12-1.
"She's dropping weight, is in good form, and four is my number," said De Martino. "Why not take a shot?"
E Z Passer settled near the back of the pack early and appeared to be making a move around the far turn, but ran evenly in the stretch.
The next Grand Mondays winner will be drawn on February 24.
