Fresh off his fourth Florida Derby victory with Always Dreaming on Saturday, trainer Todd Pletcher has shored up his always formidable contingent for Wood Memorial Day at Aqueduct Racetrack, led by the much-anticipated stakes debut of Battalion Runner in the Grade 2, $750,000 Wood Memorial presented by NYRA Bets on April 8.

Scratched from the Florida Derby as the 3-1 second-choice on the morning line, Battalion Runner was confirmed for the Wood following a half-mile breeze at Pletcher's Palm Beach Downs training base Sunday morning. The gray colt by Unbridled's Song covered the distance in 49 1/5 seconds under his regular jockey, Hall of Famer John Velazquez, per Gulfstream Park.

Battalion Runner is owned by Vincent and Teresa Viola's New York-based St. Elias Stable, which also owns an interest in the Kentucky Derby-bound Always Dreaming.

"Part of the strategy was we were trying to keep him and Always Dreaming separated because of the common ownership," said Pletcher. "So it kind of came down to finalizing which race we were ultimately going to end up in. Based on the breeze this morning, we felt like the Wood made the most sense."

A $700,000 yearling purchase, Battalion Runner garnered attention when he broke his maiden in gate-to-wire fashion by 8 ¾ lengths on December 31 at Gulfstream. He followed that effort with a two-turn stretch out in his most recent start, dueling through a 1 1/16-mile optional-claiming contest to prevail by 1 ¼ lengths as the 1-5 favorite on February 3.

"We feel like he's consistently run well fresh and we've been training all along with either running in the Florida Derby or the following weekend in mind so hopefully we have him fit enough and ready enough to run his best," Pletcher said.

Pletcher, who has won four iterations of the Wood with Eskendereya (2010), Gemologist (2012), Verrazano (2013), and Outwork (2016), will also be represented by Three Diamonds Farm's Bonus Points. 

Based this winter at Belmont Park, the Maryland-bred son of Majestic Warrior closed late in his graded stakes debut to finish second to El Areeb in the Grade 3 Jerome on January 2. Bonus Points returned for the February 4 Grade 3 Withers, traveling wide throughout to finish fourth.

"He's a consistent horse, he tries hard," said Pletcher. "We're hoping that maybe with a more legitimate pace, he'll get a little better run at it. We need him to step up and improve a bit, but we feel like he's a horse that'll handle the distance and, with a little bit of pace setup, might be able to get a piece of it."

Also on Wood Day, Grade 3 winner Theory is set to make his kick off his 2017 campaign in the Grade 3 Bay Shore for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs. As a 2-year-old, the Gemologist colt won the six-furlong Futurity in impressive fashion at Belmont in October. Theory spiked a fever immediately following a dull 10th-place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, his first try around two turns, and was turned out at WinStar before joining Pletcher's Palm Beach string in late December.

"He's been very well and training really good," said Pletcher. "He's probably been ready to run for a couple of weeks now. It's just that the [Spectacular Bid at Gulfstream] didn't fill and we had to go to a backup plan, but he seems like he's been happy and training well. 

"We feel like he's well-suited for one-turn races," he added. "We're not ruling out stretching him out down the road, we just felt like this was sort of the logical distance to get him started."

Pletcher's other Wood Memorial weekend contenders include multiple Grade 3 winner Tommy Macho for the Grade 1, $400,000 Carter Handicap, Alex M. Robb and Haynesfield victor Send It In for the Grade 3, $150,000 Excelsior, recent maiden winner Stay Fond for the Grade 2, $300,000 Gazelle, all on the Wood Memorial undercard.

Clipthecouponannie, winner of the 2016 Franklin Square, will make her seasonal debut the following Sunday in the Grade 3, $150,000 Distaff Handicap. All of Pletcher's Florida-based runners are slated to ship to New York on Tuesday.

Arlene's Sun Star Stable's Miss Sky Warrior will ship to New York on Monday and be stabled at Aqueduct ahead of the Grade 2 Gazelle on Saturday, Wood Memorial Day, trainer Kelly Breen said Sunday.

The Kentucky-bred will return to the Big A with wins in four consecutive starts, including three straight graded stakes wins. Miss Sky Warrior won the Grade 2 Davona Dale last out on March 4 at Gulfstream Park and will be returning to the track where she won the Grade 2 Demoiselle at the Gazelle distance of 1 1/8 miles.

"She seemed to like the track, so that's why we're coming back," said Breen, who said that success was why he chose the Gazelle over the Gulfstream Oaks.

Miss Sky Warrior, who has won every race since finishing fourth in her debut, last breezed on Wednesday at Palm Meadows Training Center in Boynton Beach, Florida. The First Samurai filly covered four furlongs in 47.90 seconds.

Paco Lopez, the jockey for all five of her previous starts, will have the return call. 

"Things are going well, so why change things?" Breen said.

Irish War Cry turned in his final work Sunday morning before his bid in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial. The son of Curlin went six furlongs in 1:13.40 on the dirt at Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland. 

Trainer Graham Motion said Irish War Cry will ship to New York on Wednesday, where he likely will be stabled at Belmont Park.

Motion said Irish War Cry, who started his career 3-for-3 before a seventh-place finish in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth on March 4 at Gulfstream Park, should benefit from the five-week break heading into the Wood, which will be his Aqueduct debut and also his first start at 1 1/8 miles.

A New Jersey homebred, Irish War Cry is the first graded stakes winner for owner Isabelle de Tomaso, the daughter of Amory L. Haskell, who was the first president and chairman of the Monmouth Park Jockey Club and also the man for whom the Grade 1 Haskell is named.

De Tomaso, who won her first race in 2003, is coming off a personal-best six-win campaign, with Irish War Cry, Irish Strait and Irish Defence winning two races apiece in 2016. The 86-year-old bred all three of those winners.

"She's great, I've trained for Isabelle for five years now and she's a pleasure," Motion said. "She's the kind of owner who, if you call her, she thinks there's something wrong. She would rather you not call. It's fun to have a nice horse for her, obviously."

Meanwhile, Klaravich Stables and William H. Lawrence's Cloud Computing put in his final work for Saturday's Grade 2 Wood Memorial on Sunday morning at Belmont Park, breezing four furlongs in 49 seconds flat on the training track as he gears up to make just his third career start with a possible trip to the Kentucky Derby on the line.

The son of Maclean's Music won his February 11 debut by 1 ¾ lengths going six furlongs at Aqueduct before jumping into the stakes ranks in the Grade 3 Gotham on March 4, where he finished an impressive second at 7-1.

Cloud Computing earned a 96 Beyer Speed Figure and 20 qualifying Kentucky Derby points for the effort, putting him on the cusp of securing a spot in the starting gate for the "Run for the Roses" on May 6.

Fox Sports 2 will broadcast the first edition of "Aqueduct Live" on Wood Memorial Day from 3:00-5:30 p.m. ET, covering the Wood Memorial undercard, including the Grade 1, $400,000 Carter Handicap.

Also on tap for Wood Memorial Day are the spring meet's official Kentucky Oaks qualifier, the Grade 2, $300,000 Gazelle for sophomore fillies at 1 1/8 miles, as well as pair of Grade 3's with the $250,000 Bay Shore for 3-year-old sprinters at seven furlongs, and the $150,000 Excelsior for 4-year-olds and up going 1 ¼ miles.

NBC Sports Network will provide live coverage of the Wood Memorial in a two-hour broadcast from 5:30-7:30, along with the Grade 2 Blue Grass at Keeneland and the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita Park. Post time for the Wood Memorial is scheduled for 5:50.

Additionally, registration is now open for the Wood Memorial Challenge. The $500 live money buy-in tournament gives horseplayers an opportunity to compete for prize money in addition to one seat, including entry fees, to the 2017 Belmont Stakes Challenge in June and two seats to the 2018 National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas.
