The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) today announced purse values for open claiming races will increase, beginning with the Friday, March 8 card at Aqueduct Racetrack.
In January, the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) formally adopted an amendment allowing racing organizations to apply for adjustments to the purse-to-claim ratio, with the provision that enhanced measures to ensure the soundness and safety of equine athletes are in place.
NYRA applied for - and subsequently received - such an exemption that provides for an adjustment to claiming race purses through March 31, 2019.
In addition to the standard level of pre-race safety scrutiny applied to all horses racing at a NYRA track, NYRA will apply an additional, secondary level of scrutiny to all horses competing in races with adjusted purse-to-claim ratios.
As of Friday's card at Aqueduct, open claiming races will now be contested at the following purse values:
