Pick 6 carryover of $85K into Sunday’s program at Belmont at the Big A

by Mary Eddy

Sunday’s card at the Belmont at the Big A fall meet will be bolstered by a Pick 6 carryover of $85,635 after the multi-race wager went unsolved on Saturday’s 11-race program.

The $1 Pick 6 returned $28,545 to bettors who selected 5-of-6 winners correctly.

The sequence kicked off in Race 6 with a price as American Apple [No. 3, $97] scored a neck victory in the Grade 3 Matron under Eric Cancel to provide trainer Daniel Leitch with his first stakes win. The Norman Cash-trained Steinbeck [No. 3, $29.20] followed in Race 7 with a half-length score in a six-furlong allowance under Dylan Davis.

The graded action continued in Race 8 with 5-year-old mare War Like Goddess [No. 2, $3.90*] defeating six male rivals to give both Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott and jockey Jose Lezcano their second graded win on the card in the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic.

Race 9 saw Junior Alvarado engineer a winning ride aboard Skylander [No. 3, $12.20] in a $40,000 claimer for conditioner Jeffrey Englehart before She’s a Mia [No. 4, $6.50*] took down a state-bred turf allowance in Race 10 with Trevor McCarthy up for trainer Christophe Clement.

With the carryover already guaranteed, the David Duggan trainee Mouly [No. 5, $17.80] graduated in Race 11, a $40,000 state-bred maiden claimer, under Kendrick Carmouche to close out the card.

Sunday’s Pick 6 sequence will kick off in Race 4 [2:20 p.m. Eastern] and includes the Grade 3, $150,000 Futurity, a “Win And You’re In” for the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, in Race 6; and the Grade 3, $150,000 Knickerbocker in Race 8. First post for the nine-race card is 12:35 p.m.
