NYRA adds purse incentives for Aqueduct's G1 Cigar Mile

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) has announced a pair of purse incentives that, for eligible horses, could double the value of the Grade 1, $500,000 Cigar Mile Handicap on November 30 at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Any previous Grade 1 winner who competes in the Cigar Mile will race for a gross purse of $750,000. Should a winner of any Breeders' Cup race from any year take part, he or she would be running for a purse of $1 million.

"Run as a one-turn mile on the dirt and spaced four weeks after the Breeders' Cup, the Cigar Mile is perfectly positioned to serve as an end-of-season exclamation point for a wide array of horses whose connections might have championship aspirations," said P.J. Campo, NYRA vice president and director of racing. "By enhancing the purse for these horses, we are providing yet another reason for horsemen-and fans-to circle November 30 on their racing calendars."

Last year's Cigar Mile was contested by 2012 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner Groupie Doll, who finished second to Stay Thirsty, who earned the second Grade 1 win of his career. Groupie Doll was later named the 2012 Eclipse Award winner as Champion Female Sprinter.
