Big Apple Babies

Big Apple Babies is a series that takes a glance at the pedigrees and sales histories of select 2-year-olds who are making their debuts in maiden special weight races at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. Many of history’s best horses have commenced their careers in New York, and Big Apple Babies will help fans find the stars of tomorrow as they head postward for the first time.

RUBY LIPS (2yo chestnut filly, Hard Spun—It’s a Ruby, by Rubiano) is a half-sister to five winners from six siblings to race. Those siblings include Like a Gem, a multiple stakes-winner at Woodbine and runner-up in the Ontario Lassie Stakes at age two; Cool Gator, who was Grade 3 placed in the Grey Breeders’ Cup Stakes as a juvenile; and Win and Reign, who won Woodbine’s Vandal Stakes and placed in two other stakes at age two. Neither of the other two winning siblings were victorious as juveniles.

Her second dam is Grade 2 El Encino and Grade 3 Monrovia Handicap winner Klassy Kim, and her third dam, Kool Arrival, won the Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes and Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap.

Ascot Tobie is out of Jackjon, who was stakes placed at Woodbine and produced seven winners from eight foals to race. These foals include John the Magician, a multiple stakes winner at Woodbine, and Jonjack, who raced only twice and never won but finished second in Woodbine’s Victorian Queen Stakes at age two.
