Big Apple Babies

Big Apple Babies is a series that takes a glance at the pedigrees and sales histories of select 2-year-olds who are making their debuts in maiden special weight races at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. Many of history’s best horses have commenced their careers in New York, and Big Apple Babies will help fans find the stars of tomorrow as they head postward for the first time.

REVELATIONIST (2yo dark bay/brown colt, Corinthian—Sky Beam, by Kingmambo) is out of an 0-7 daughter of Weekend in Seattle, a Grade 1-placed full-sister to Hall of Famer A.P. Indy and half-sister to Grade 1 Preakness winner Summer Squall. Mambo in Seattle, a half-brother to Sky Beam won a restricted stakes at Saratoga and was second by a nose in the Grade 1 Travers. Sky Beam has one other foal of racing age, Sky Kingdom, a two-time winner in Southern California who was fourth in the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity and fifth in the Grade 2 Robert B. Lewis in two stakes tries.

FORTIFY (2yo bay colt, Distorted Humor—Kotuku, by A.P. Indy) is out of a placed daughter of Flagbird, who was awarded highweight honors in England, Ireland, and Italy, with her top win coming in the Group 1 Premio Presidente Della Repubblica. Flagbird produced three stakes-placed runners, including Dubai Belle, herself the dam of Grade 1 Ashland winner Little Belle. Little Belle, like Kotuku, was by A.P. Indy.

EL DURO (2yo gray/roan colt, Tapit—Feline Story, by Tale of the Cat) is out of a mare who as a juvenile won the Grade 3 Sorority and a sophomore captured the Grade 3 Floral Park Handicap and was second in the Grade 1 Prioress. Feline Story has one winner from three foals to race, with Simba’s Story owning a maiden triumph at Aqueduct Racetrack and an allowance score at Gulfstream Park.

UNLIKELY SCENARIO (2yo chestnut colt, Distorted Humor—Lassie’s Legacy, by Deputy Minister) hails from the same family as Revelationist, being a grandson of Grade 3 winner/Grade 1 placed Weekend Surprise, the dam of A.P. Indy and Summer Squall. Lassie’s Legacy, whose lone win came at the Fair Grounds, has produced Aspiring, third in the Grade 3 Bourbonette Oaks, and Happy Week, who has placed in a pair of stakes.

EQUUS PRIME (2yo bay colt, Dynaformer—Catchascatchcan, by Kingmambo) is a half-brother to Antonius Pius, who in Ireland won the Group 2 Railway and was third in the Group 1 St. James’s Place before finishing second in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile. Their dam was victorious in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks in England.

SOULSINGING (2yo bay colt, Unbridled’s Song—Ticket to Seattle, by Capote) is the first foal out of his dam, a sprinter who was stakes placed at 2 before going on to win a listed stakes at Delaware Park and finish second in a pair of Grade 3 races at 3. Tizway, an older half-brother to Ticket to Seattle, won last year’s Grade 1 Metropolitan and Whitney handicaps.

THANE (2yo dark bay or brown colt, by Medaglia d’Oro—Servalina, by A.P. Indy) is out of an unraced granddaughter of Fitted Crown, who produced three stakes winners, including Excellent Meeting, who posted Grade 1 wins in the Oak Leaf, Hollywood Starlet, Las Virgenes, and Santa Anita Oaks. Thane’s granddam produced two winners from as many foals to race, while his dam has produced only one other foal of racing age, 0-2 Move It On Over. Thane was the fourth most expensive of 86 yearlings by his sire to sell at auction in 2011.

SUBSONIC (2yo bay colt, Malibu Moon—Voyage, by Rahy) is the second foal out of his unraced dam to make it to the starting gate. Three of Voyage’s siblings have earned black type, including half-sister Pine Island, winner of the Grade 1 Alabama and Grade 1 Gazelle, and Point Of Entry, victorious in this year’s Grade 1 Man o’ War on turf.
