Big Apple Babies is a series that takes a glance at the pedigrees and sales histories of select 2-year-olds who are making their debuts in maiden special weight races at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, or Saratoga Race Course. Many of history’s best horses have commenced their careers in New York, and Big Apple Babies will help fans find the stars of tomorrow as they head postward for the first time.

MIDNITE POPPA (2yo bay colt, Unbridled’s Song—Island Sand, by Tabasco Cat) is out of a mare who won the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes and the Grade 2 Delaware Handicap, and placed second in the 2004 Kentucky Oaks. Island Sand has produced only one winner from three foals to race.

NATIONAL PRAYER (2yo bay colt, Songandaprayer—Senate Caucus, by Siphon) doesn’t have the most illustrious immediate family, with only one winning sibling from three to race, but his third dam, Ruby Slippers, is the dam of multiple Grade 1 winning sprinter Rubiano, as well as the granddam of Grade 3 Laurel Futurity and Grade 1 Wood Memorial winner Tapit. Ruby Slippers is from a very productive family, as her second dam Foggy Note was not only a multiple stakes winner, but also the dam of Grade 3 La Jolla Mile Stakes and Grade 3 Del Mar Derby winner Relaunch. Relaunch’s full sister, multiple stakes winner Moon Glitter, is the dam of Ruby Slippers, along with multiple stakes-winning sprinter Glitterman.

WILL TAKE CHARGE (2yo chestnut colt, Unbridled’s Song—Take Charge Lady, by Dehere) is out of multiple Grade 1 winner Take Charge Lady, who was victorious in the first three starts of her career, including the Grade 2 Alcibiades Stakes at age two, and later posted Grade 1 wins in the Ashland Stakes and Overbrook Spinster Stakes, winning the latter event twice. Take Charge Lady has produced three winners from four foals to race, including Grade 1 Florida Derby winner Take Charge Indy.
