Across the Board with Andy Serling Episode 29: Dr. Jennifer Durenberger

The latest episode of the Across the Board with Andy Serling podcast, featuring an interview with NYRA Chief Examining Veterinarian Dr. Jennifer Durenberger, is now available for download.

As head of the largest veterinarian team at a North American racetrack, Dr. Durenberger oversees NYRA's efforts to regulate the safety and welfare of all thoroughbred racehorses at each NYRA track.

In Episode 29, Dr. Durenberger discusses her career in racing and expounds on the key role regulatory veterinarians have in assuring the safest racing product is presented to the public.

After starting her career in racing as a veterinary assistant at Canterbury Downs in 1991, Dr. Durenberger received her veterinary degree from Cornell University in 2002. Following an internship at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, she joined NYRA as an association veterinarian from 2003 - 08.

Dr. Durenberger moved to California in 2008 where she worked as a veterinarian for the California Horse Racing Board while completing a law degree. She then served as a steward at Delta Downs in Louisiana, before becoming the Director of Racing for the Massachusetts Gaming Commission from 2012-15. In that role, she oversaw the regulatory authority for all pari-mutuel and racing-related activities in the state.

She briefly returned to Canterbury Park as a steward in 2016 for the Minnesota Racing Commission, before she rejoined NYRA in 2017 as Chief Examining Veterinarian.

Dr. Durenberger also serves as a member of the Racing Officials Accreditation Program executive board, as well as serving on the American Association of Equine Practitioners Ethics and Professional Conduct Committee and on the Jockey Club's Racing Equipment and Safety Committee.
