Dynamic Pricing arrives in time in G3 Beaugay

Keith McCalmont May 6 2025

Klaravich Stables’ Dynamic Pricing picked up her second career graded victory with a sustained rally to capture Sunday’s Grade 3, $175,000 Beaugay, a 1 1/16-mile inner turf test for older fillies and mares, at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Trained by five-time Eclipse Award-winner Chad Brown and piloted by Irad Ortiz, Jr., the 4-year-old Night of Thunder bay was making her seasonal debut from a half-length third in the Listed Winter Memories in September here.

Despite being forced to fan out nine paths in upper stretch by the pacesetting Raqiya, Dynamic Pricing produced a strong kick and arrived in the final jumps to score a half-length victory over a game and determined Edict.

“It was nice off a layoff that she was ready and avoided the trouble in this race. She was able to get her season started the right way,” said Brown, who also sent out fourth-place Grayosh and sixth-place Spaliday.

The Frankie Dettori-piloted Raqiya stumbled at the start but recovered quickly to show the way through an opening quarter-mile in 22.67 seconds over the firm footing with Edict keeping close watch from second under Hall of Famer John Velazquez.

Dettori slowed the pace down along the backstretch and Dylan Davis took the initiative to hustle Spaliday from sixth all the way up to second as the half-mile elapsed in 47.97.

Raqiya led the field into the final turn with Spaliday on her flank and Edict nicely gapped out in third with a host of challengers cueing up their bids, including Dynamic Pricing, Heredia and the rail-riding Grayosh through three-quarters in 1:11.75.

Raqiya began to drift out late in the turn, carrying Spaliday with her and forcing Dynamic Pricing jockey Ortiz, Jr. to consider his options.

“Believe me, I wanted to move earlier but I couldn't,” Ortiz, Jr. said. “Then I hit the clear and I saw Frankie's horse having trouble to make the turn. I said, 'Oh my God.' So now I don't want to check my horse, stop the momentum, so I said by the time I get there, he is either going to blow the turn or make the turn. He controlled the horse. I got the time to go around them and get there on time."

Edict was able to avoid the trouble and took the lead at the stretch call under encouragement from Velazquez as Grayosh cut the corner and attempted to rush up the rail as Heredia found her best stride in the three-path.

Dynamic Pricing was moving best of all late and needed every inch of the stretch to put away Edict, who rebuffed the bids of both third-place Heredia and fourth-place Grayosh. Dynamic Pricing stopped the clock in a final time of 1:42.12 and provided his trainer a record-extending seventh win in this event.

Mohawk Trail, Spaliday, Lady Firefoot and Raqiya rounded out the order of finish. No Mo Candy and main-track only entrant Amanda’s Folly were scratched.

The David Donk-trained Edict, a dual Group 1-winner in her native Argentina, provided her best local performance yet in just her third start in North America after two off-the-board efforts here last fall.

“I thought at the sixteenth pole I was home,” Velazquez said. “That other horse [Dynamic Pricing] came so far out that she never knew that horse passed her. She is much better this year. She's more adjusted this year, and Dave can train her the way he wants her, and she showed that today."

Dynamic Pricing graduated on debut in November 2023 at the Big A and made the grade with a rallying half-length score in the Grade 2 Edgewood last May at Churchill Downs. She missed by a half-length in the Grade 2 Lake Placid last summer in a race won by Grayosh over She Feels Pretty, who exited that effort to win a pair of Grade 1 tilts and Friday's Grade 3 Modesty at Churchill.

Bred in Ireland by Epona Bloodstock, Dynamic Pricing banked $96,250 in victory while improving her record to 8-3-0-3. She returned $9 for a $2 win ticket.
