Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero, Jr. is the latest guest on the Across the Board with Andy Serling podcast, now available for download.

Cordero joined Serling at Belmont Park to reflect on his triumphant career in racing. First arriving in the United States in 1962 from his native Puerto Rico, Cordero established himself as one of the top riders in the country and especially on the New York Racing Association Circuit. 

A three-time Eclipse Award winner for outstanding jockey, Cordero won more than 7,000 races during his 32 year career with victories in notable races including the Kentucky Derby three times, the Preakness twice, and the Belmont Stakes in 1976 aboard Bold Forbes..

Affectionately known as the ‘King of Saratoga’, Cordero won 14 riding titles at the premier summer meet, including an unprecedented stretch of 11 straight from 1976-86, and has also won prestigious awards including the Mike Venezia Award and George Wolf Memorial Award. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988.

Now in his second career as a top jockeys agent, Cordero has been instrumental in the ascent of fellow Hall of Famer John Velazquez and up-and-coming rider Manny Franco serving as mentor and agent to both.

Velazquez won this year’s Kentucky Derby aboard Always Dreaming while using Cordero’s old saddle. Cordero discussed the special relationship he has with his protégé during the podcast and what it means to have this special piece of equipment still in use.
