Fully Subscribed up in time in G2 Shuvee
Klaravich Stables’ Fully Subscribed, expertly handled by Flavien Prat, overtook dual Grade 1-winner Scottish Lassie in the final jumps to capture Friday’s Grade 2, $250,000 Shuvee, a nine-furlong route for older fillies and mares, at Saratoga Race Course.
Trained by five-time Eclipse Award-winner Chad Brown, the 4-year-old Tiz the Law chestnut maintained her perfect 8-4-3-1 in-the-money record, rallying stoutly down the center of the track to capture her third graded win following past successes in the Grade 2 Mother Goose and Grade 3 Comely last winter at Aqueduct Racetrack.
“I wasn’t sure she’d get there, because I mean, that’s a really high-quality horse [Scottish Lassie] to run down there,” Brown said. “But once she got off the rail, I figured it would be close at the finish because I know this filly, once she gets in the clear, she does her best running.”
Scottish Lassie broke alertly from post 4 under Jose Ortiz, but it was the Luis Saez-piloted Snowyte who scooted up the rail from the inside post to mark the opening quarter-mile in 23.72 seconds over the fast main track.
Snowyte showed the way down the backstretch and into the final turn through a half-mile in 47.98 and three-quarters in 1:11.75 with Scottish Lassie on her flank and the pair of Fully Subscribed and Bless the Broken stalking.
Scottish Lassie advanced with purpose through the turn to overtake Snowyte with Fully Subscribed still in fourth position. Scottish Lassie was well in command at the top of the lane and appeared to be home and cooled out, but a resurgent Fully Subscribed was tipped off the rail and responded willingly to right-handed encouragement from Prat to storm home a half-length winner in a final time of 1:49.46.
“I wanted to sit close to [Scottish Lassie]. It worked out good. Turning for home, it looked like [Scottish Lassie] opened up on me and at that point I thought I was going to run second, and in the last eighth of a mile, sixteenth of a mile she found another gear,” said Prat, who has piloted Fully Subscribed through each of her last four outings.
It was 4 3/4-lengths back to Snowyte in third with Bless the Broken, Valtellina and the Brown-trained Aeolian rounding out the order of finish. Eunomia was scratched.
Fully Subscribed started her current campaign with a one-length second to Shred the Gnar in the Grade 1 La Troienne on May 1 at Churchill Downs. She arrived at the Shuvee from a dead-heat second with Bless the Broken in the local Grade 1 Ogden Phipps presented by Ford on June 5, which was won emphatically by Nitrogen, who is training toward a start versus males in the Grade 1, $1 million Whitney on August 8 here, a “Win and You’re In” for the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic in October at Keeneland.
“I’m very proud of her. She is a very consistent horse in the morning and in the afternoon,” Brown said. “Her first two starts of the year were terrific. She just ran into two really, really good fillies [Shred the Gnar, Nitrogen], who ran terrific that day. Today, she ran into another top filly and was able to get the better of her today.”
The Jorge Abreu-trained Scottish Lassie won the 2024 Grade 1 Frizette at Belmont at the Big A and added the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks to her ledger here last summer, besting 2024 Champion 2-Year-Old Filly Immersive by 15 1/2-lengths.
Prat was aboard Scottish Lassie for a last-out optional-claiming win in June here to start her current campaign with Ortiz picking up the mount for the first time in the afternoon on Friday.
“Second off the layoff, she was a lot tighter. Jorge did a great job bringing her back off the layoff and today,” Ortiz said. “[Fully Subscribed] is a nice mare. I think [Scottish Lassie] ran a really good race. I think the Personal Ensign is going to be a great race as well."
Brown indicated it’s likely the two fillies could square off again in the Grade 1, $500,000 Personal Ensign on August 29, a “Win and You’re In” for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff in October at Keeneland.
“I’d say so. I’m really proud of this filly. She’s trained really well,” Brown said. “She’s run into two really, really good fillies in her first two starts of the year, and she ran into another really good filly today, but she was able to get the better of her.”
Fully Subscribed, a $300,000 purchase at the 2024 OBS Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, is out of the winning Candy Ride mare Sweetbaby. Her second dam is Grade 1-winning millionaire Rutherienne, who won eight graded stakes in her 11-for-24 career.
Bred in Kentucky by Payson Stud, Fully Subscribed banked $137,500 in victory. She returned $5.44 for a $2 win bet as the 8-5 second choice to 7-5 favorite Scottish Lassie.
