Saratoga Race Course to host local hoops and hockey head coaches

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) today announced that head coaches from two popular Capital Region sports programs will be available for photo and autograph opportunities at historic Saratoga Race Course as part of Fan Appreciation Week festivities.
Siena Men’s Basketball head coach Gerry McNamara and Siena Women’s Basketball head coach Terry Primm will visit The Spa on Wednesday, August 27, while newly appointed Adirondack Thunder head coach Sylvain Cloutier will make an appearance on Friday, August 29. Both meet-and-greets will take place from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the Jockey Silks Porch.
McNamara and Primm will present a trophy in the Winner’s Circle following Wednesday’s fifth race entitled, Siena Saints MarchOn!, while Cloutier will do so during Friday’s aptly named fifth race, Adirondack Thunder Skate into Saratoga!
“NYRA is thrilled to offer fans the opportunity to meet the head coaches of Siena and the Adirondack Thunder as these programs prepare to take center stage in the Capital Region,” said NYRA Vice President, Communications Pat McKenna. “We wish both Siena and the Thunder organization a successful 2025-’26 campaign.”
A crucial piece of the 2003 NCAA National Champion Syracuse team during his playing days and a longtime assistant coach for the Orange before assuming the head coaching duties at Siena last year, McNamara enters his second year with the Green and Gold. Primm ascended to lead the women’s program following three years as an assistant coach and made an immediate impact, leading the Saints to their third consecutive winning record and a berth in the WNIT.
Named the fifth head coach in program history this past July, Cloutier began his professional career with the Adirondack Red Wings and played 287 games from 1993 to 1998, while also spending three seasons with the Adirondack Frostbite. Beginning his coaching career in 2008, he was inducted into the Adirondack Hockey Hall of Fame in 2020.
The coaches’ appearances coincide with Fan Appreciation Week festivities at Saratoga Race Course which will include the season’s final premium giveaway, a Saratoga quarter zip sweatshirt, free with paid admission while supplies last, on Sunday, August 31.
Stakes action on Wednesday, August 27, will include the Listed $150,000 P.G. Johnson presented by Snap-On, a 1 1/16-mile inner turf test for juvenile fillies; the rescheduled Grade 1, $150,000 Jonathan Sheppard; and the $150,000 Funny Cide, a six-furlong sprint for New York-bred 2-year-olds. The Sheppard, a 2 3/8-mile steeplechase handicap for older horses originally slated for Wednesday, August 20, was rescheduled due to heavy rain.
Friday’s card features two Listed $150,000 events on turf, including the one-mile Perfect Sting for older fillies and mares, and the 1 1/16-mile Bernard Baruch for older horses.
First post time is 1:10 p.m. on Wednesday and 12:35 p.m. on Friday. Admission gates open both days at 11 a.m.
